RED ALARM: This announcement for the return date of Star Trek: Lower Decks includes spoilers for the second season finale of the animated series. Proceed with caution if you still haven’t sunk your Kzinti claws into the entertaining series developed and created by Mike McMahan.
Paramount Plus reveals Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for Season Three with 10 new episodes, and the series received a fourth season renewal.

The second season of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks had a jam-packed season finale. Not only did Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) celebrate her first First Contact alongside the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos, she was also arrested by Starfleet Intelligence — shakes fist at those guys — for allegedly planning an attack on the Pakled planet.
Ending on a cliffhanger, the season finale, aptly titled “First First Contact,” left fans of the animated series eagerly awaiting the show’s third season to see what happens next to Captain Freeman and how the Cerritos crew will band together to save her from the Federation’s wrongful imprisonment.
When I spoke to series creator McMahan in December 2021, he discussed some of what we can expect for the third season of the series. He told us fans could expect to see more of Jen (Lauren Lapkus) and Mariner’s (Tawny Newsome) relationship and time travel in future storylines.
We don’t have an official release date for the upcoming third season of Lower Decks, but we know it’ll debut in the summer of 2022.
What to Expect for T’Lyn on Star Trek: Lower Decks
One of my favorite characters introduced in the second season was T’Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz). When I asked McMahan when fans will see more of the Vulcan character, he said she was more popular than the writer’s room expected, so he’s hoping to develop her role beyond Season Three.
He said, “I’m so excited to write more stuff for T’Lyn. She only gets a little bit in Season Three. Still, it’s partially because we were writing Season Three when you were watching Season Two, so that episode hadn’t fully come in yet, and I wanted to make sure it was as good as I thought it would be before I started tipping the scales a little bit and seeing a lot more of T’Lyn.”

Here’s to a T’Lyn-full Season Four!
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season Three debuts sometime this summer with a total of 10 episodes. It also stars Eugene Cordero as Ensign Samathan Rutherford, Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler, Noël Wells as Ensign D’Vana Tendi, Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs, Jerry O’Connell as Commander Jack Ransom and Gillian Vigman as Doctor T’Ana.
