Three new characters will arrive in Middle-earth for Season 2 of Prime Video’s smash hit series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Per a press release from Amazon Studios, acclaimed actors Ciarán Hinds, Tanya Moodie and Rory Kinnear will join the massive cast of the epic fantasy that highlights the Second Age. Their roles are unknown other than they’ll appear in a recurring capacity. The second season is currently in production in the UK.
Most fantasy fans probably recognize Hinds as the formidable Mance Rayder, the leader of the Free Folk, from HBO’s Game of Thrones. Other credits include the Oscar-winning Belfast, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Kin. He most recently starred opposite Charlie Cox in Netflix’s action thriller, Treason.
Moodie is also no stranger to fantasy, having starred in A Discovery of Witches as Agatha Wilson, one of the Daemon members of the Congregation. Her other credits include Motherland, Empire of Light opposite Olivia Colman and The Man Who Fell to Earth. She can be seen next in the comedy series The Change as Joy.
If you’re a genre fan, you might know Kinnear as John Clare/The Creature in Showtime’s Gothic horror Penny Dreadful. His resume also includes Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, The Imitation Game and the 007 franchise as Bill Tanner. Kinnear stars as Dave in the autobiographical comedy Bank of Dave, released in January of this year.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuted on September 1, 2022, with Season 1 concluding on October 14 after an eight-episode run. It has now been viewed by 100 million people globally and is one of Amazon Studios’ most expensive shows. During its first season, it boasts the distinction of being Prime Video’s top original series in every region.
I’m excited to see who these actors are playing. I thoroughly enjoyed the first season of The Rings of Power despite the narrative bumps here and there. It’s a wholly immersive, beautifully ethereal show that deserves less flak.
