It’s apparently trailer week for Marvel properties. Yesterday we got our first look at Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol.2, from Marvel Studios, and now today we’re getting our first look at the third Wolverine film (and last for Hugh Jackman) from Fox Studios, simply titled Logan.
In fact, we got two separate trailers for Logan — a General Audience trailer and a Red Band trailer. Both are labeled and embedded below.
General Audience Trailer
Red Band Trailer
You watched them, right? Don’t just gloss by those trailers — watch them! They’re great!
And now, here are our top five thoughts and observations from watching the trailer.
OLD MAN LOGAN
It seems that the rumors that this film is based on Old Man Logan, at least in part, are certainly panning out to be true. In that book, Logan lived in exile in a post-apocalyptic age where almost all of the heroes were dead and there really weren’t any more mutants. We’ve certainly got that in spades here, as all of those check marks appear to be ticked.
Along with that, though, Logan was an old man who kept to himself and stayed out of the fight. His healing factor had slowed down and he just wasn’t what he used to be. We certainly see an old, grumpy and crotchety Logan in this trailer. He is a scarred and sore man, moving slowly in parts of the trailer. He keeps to himself so much that when a little girl shows up at his doorstep, his response is “someone else will come along.”
So, it’s not an exact Old Man Logan adaptation, but it certainly appears to be inspired by certain parts of it.
DONALD PIERCE
Donald Pierce, played by Boyd Holbrook, is the leader of the Reavers here and looks absolutely menacing. He and his team appear to be hunting down mutants. In fact, it seems likely that it’s these jerks that Logan and the Professor (Patrick Stewart) are hiding from in that abandoned water tower.
We don’t get any dialogue from him, only dangerous stares, a few punches thrown and shots fired. However, he seems to run a team that is relentless in their search and pursuit of wiping out mutants.
But, real talk though, that cybernetic hand says it all. Donald Pierce is a cyborg. Wolverine can cut him to little pieces all he wants, it appears that Pierce can just solder himself back together time and again.
PROFESSOR X
What is going on with poor Professor Charles Xavier in this film? By all accounts, it seems that he is losing control over his powers. As he lays in the bed, seemingly muttering to himself, we can’t help but wonder if he’s uncontrollably hearing the thoughts and voices of a thousand people at once. Though he still offers his wisdom and guidance to Logan, he’s certainly not the powerful mutant he once was.
Though, that being said, there is that one moment where some great wind seems to be emanating out of him and we can’t help but wonder if this is some sort of telepathic, psychic supernova, Professor X’s last great wonderful feat.
But man does the Professor look weak and old and the most vulnerable he’s ever been.
X-23
Truly, we live in an age of wonders and miracles. X-23 is going to be in a movie. Laura Kinney. The 23rd weaponized clone of Logan. She’s in a movie. And she looks perfect. The actress, Sienna Novikov, seems to be exactly what we’ve all been looking for in a feral, scared little girl who is the best at what she does, even if what she does isn’t very nice.
Despite her youth and power, she, like both Logan and the Professor, appears to be very vulnerable and in need of some protection and guidance. This responsibility, of course, has to fall upon Logan’s very tired and very weary shoulders. However, despite this, we certainly see her holding her own. In one fight, she leaps from one assailant to the next, no doubt murdering both. Then, in another moment, she appears to attack Logan himself.
In fact, in that particular scene, it appears that this Laura’s claws resemble the X-23 from the comics, with two claws on top of her hand and one underneath.
RATED-R
Oh boy is it ever. Watch the Red Band trailer if you haven’t yet. It’s definitely got some gruesome, violent rated-r moments. This is the best possible way for Hugh Jackman to leave the role — with a trail of severed limbs, disemboweled bodies and pools of blood behind him.
