Disney‘s live action Mulan finally has more casting news. And this is a big one! According to THR, the mouse house has cast the love interest of the film. Meet Yoson An. The young actor hails from New Zealand and is of Chinese descent. He will star opposite Liu Yifei in the remake.

Some of you might have noticed that it was said he’s the love interest, instead of yelling out how we have Li Shang. Well, apparently they’re going in a different direction for the character. An will be playing Chen Honghui, “a confident and ambitious recruit who joins Commander Tung’s unit”. We learned that Mulan will be his rival in the ranks, as he’s determined to be the best at everything. An joins the cast already consisting of prolific Chinese actors including Jet Li, Gong Li and Donnie Yen, who will star as Commander Tung.

This isn’t the first departure from the animated feature as the film also has a witch (Gong Li) as the main antagonist, instead of the sharp-teeth menace Shan Yu. But in terms of the live-action film, I’m very, very glad that the company has kept it’s promise keeping the cast Chinese. There is so much talent in Asia that it’s really silly not to cast them. I’m looking forward to seeing all of these actors bringing their all to the screen.

What do you think of the news? Will you be missing the sexy Captain Li Shang? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Disney news. Mulan is scheduled to release on March 27, 2020.
