The New World will have to wait. According to Variety the premiere of Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking, starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, is getting pushed back again. We’ll have to be Noise-free for a little while longer.
This isn’t the first time Chaos Walking has toiled away in postponement purgatory. Initially, the film was slated for March 1, 2019. However, reshoots came calling, and thus the flick found a new home on January 22, 2021.
Chaos Walking is based on The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. It follows Todd Hewitt (Holland), who resides on the planet New World. One day, Viola Eade (Ridley) crash lands on New World and carries the distinction of being the first woman Todd has ever seen. He was brought up to believe that the Spackle unleashed a germ that mercilessly slaughtered all the women on his planet. Now, men must live with “The Noise,” a perpetual vocalization of their thoughts. Todd cannot hear Viola’s thoughts, which is disconcerting to him.
The sci-fi thriller has been in development for nearly a decade and suffered setbacks aplenty along the way. Of course, the reshoots process also played a role in Chaos Walking‘s move to 2021, as Ridley was filming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Holland was shooting Spider-Man: Far From Home.
I can’t help but wonder if COVID-19 was the main reason for this latest delay. We’re encroaching on new year territory and most movie theaters remain closed. Perhaps a later release will see the film prosper as the pandemic slows? That being said, the majority of folks won’t receive the vaccine until spring or summer.
Chaos Walking will now hit theaters March 5, 2021.
