Get out your jazz hands, theater nerds! The story of legendary choreographer/director Bob Fosse and his partner Gwen Verdon is coming to television. And, Lin-Manuel Miranda is getting the Hamilton team back together to do it. Miranda is producing. Thomas Kail, director of Hamilton and In the Heights will be directing the series.
Based on Sam Wasson’s biography, Fosse, the eight-part limited series will focus on the romantic and creative partnership that Fosse and Verdon shared. Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams will play the famous pair.
Here’s what Variety said about the content of the series. “He was a visionary filmmaker and one of theater’s most influential choreographers and directors, while she was the greatest Broadway dancer of all time. Together they changed the face of American entertainment at a perilous cost. Featuring Fosse’s choreography, the series explores the hidden corners of show business, the price of pursuing greatness, and the suffering inflicted in the name of art.” It’s the drama of drama! Yes!

This is theater royalty telling the story of theater royalty, on TV for all to see. If that doesn’t get you excited, theater kids, nothing will. And, they’re very pointedly telling the whole story. In a joint statement, producers said, “Bob Fosse ignited a revolution in American dance, theater, and film…But, in contrast to the well-worn myth of the visionary artist working in solitude, Fosse’s work would not have been possible without Gwen Verdon, the woman who helped to mold his style – and make him a star. We are honored to work with the incredible team at FX and Fox 21, and these two extraordinary actors, to tell the story of this remarkable couple, and the complicated, fascinating relationship between them.”
Leave your troubles outside. The untitled Fosse/Verdon series will air on FX sometime in 2019.
