This is such exciting news especially for those of us who never experienced the show with its original cast. Now every one will be able to say, “I saw Hamilton with the OG cast!” However, not everyone will be able to add “on Broadway” to that sentence. Not so fast! You actually will be able to add “on Broadway” to that sentence!

Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted out confirmation of the news today. This is what the tweet said: “Disney presents Hamilton. With The Original Broadway Cast. Filmed onstage at The Richard Rodgers Theatre. In A Theater Near You. October 15, 2021. #Hamilfilm

The movie will be a live capture of a stage performance that was shot while the original cast was performing. This according to Variety. So you will be able to say “I saw Hamilton with the OG cast on Broadway!” Therefore fans who did experience the live show on Broadway will have to think of a different way to brag (and brag, they should!). Perhaps “I physically sat in the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway and saw Hamilton with the OG cast!” Hmm. That’s not too catchy. I’m sure the Hamilfans will find a way! After all, nothing beats the experience of live theatre.

Another interesting reveal in Miranda’s tweet was the “Disney presents Hamilton.” Disney paid a whopping $75 million for the international rights for the film. Disney CEO Bob Iger said of the deal, “Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that ‘Hamilton’ was hailed as an astonishing work of art. All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”

Miranda himself said in a statement, “I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations — ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Beauty and The Beast,’ ‘Aladdin.’ “I’m so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of ‘Hamilton’ — a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater. We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of ‘Hamilton’ to the largest audience possible.”

Now all we have to do is wait until October 15, 2021!
