Pride Month is finally here again! Let’s talk about superheroes. The first names that often come up when discussing comic book page heroes are generally Batman, Ironman, Wonder Woman, etc. All of these are great, but they’re also all cis het. Thankfully, there are some incredible, diverse heroes out there! Here is a list of a few LGBTQIA+ superheroes you need to know more about this pride month!

Lord Fanny

Lord Fanny was assigned male at birth and was born to a family of South American witches. The young witch’s journey goes from complicated to heartbreaking until she meets The Invisibles. She started her transition as a young child. Her grandmother decided to raise her as a female knowing that only women could inherit the family’s powers. When she enters the spirit realm to gain her powers, she comes across the god of death and tells him a joke to gain her freedom from the land of the dead. Everything seemed to be going well.

Unfortunately, Lord Fanny’s life took a downward turn at age 18 when she was brutally raped by a group of men in animal masks. At the time, she was working as a prostitute on the streets of Rio. This event brought her to an incredibly low point. Thankfully, shortly after the incident, she was recruited to The Invisibles, a group of freedom fighters, by John-A-Dreams. Now, she is a proud trans woman, ex-prostitute and witch who fights alongside her Invisibles team members. Her transness improves her powers. The more fem presenting she is, the greater her powers.

Northstar

Northstar is generally considered to be the first mainstream, openly gay superhero. Of course, he does not say the words until well after the character’s introduction. Northstar’s parents died while he and his twin sister were infants. Sadly, they both go to a foster home, and a series of events lead to the twins becoming separated. They live without knowing the other exists for many years. Before becoming a superhero, Northstar joined a terrorist cell.

Eventually, Northstar was recruited to the newly formed Alpha Flight, where his sister was already a member under the codename Aurora. After a long journey where Aurora loses her powers and gets them back, Northstar almost dies, and Alpha Flight gets disbanded twice, things start to calm down. Northstar rescues a baby born with AIDS and decides to raise her. Unfortunately, the child does not survive, but the incident causes Northstar to come out as gay. He wants to use his celebrity status to bring more attention to the AIDS virus.

Danny the Street

Danny the Street is one of the most unique characters in the comic book world. They are a sentient, genderqueer street. Yes, an actual street, pavement, street sign, the works. The character first appeared as part of the Doom Patrol in the 90s. More recently, Danny appeared in the HBO Max series Doom Patrol.

Danny can grow, shrink and change in whatever way necessary to blend in with their surroundings. Additionally, since they are a street, they communicate entirely through signs, billboards, etc., and can transport anywhere in the world. To express their gender non-conforming self, Danny often decorates traditionally “masculine” stores with pink frills. Danny the Street is one of the most wholesome characters you will ever come across. They are a home for anyone society doesn’t accept without regard to race, gender, sexuality or any other consideration. Throughout Danny’s story arc, they grew to become Danny the World and were dismantled down to Danny the Brick.

Honorable Mention – Xavin

Xavin is a member of the Xartan military and is a Super Skrull in training. They are also gender-fluid. The character was most recently featured in The Runaways television series.

There are quite a few LGBTQIA+ superheroes that did not make it on this list. While representation is still low, it is, thankfully, growing. Which one of these heroes is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
