Letterkenny Season 10 Episode 1 King of Suckers

DISCLAIMER: This recap of the Letterkenny season premiere “King of Suckers” has spoilers. Proceed at your peril.

You better settle down over there, or I’m gonna come talk to you. Letterkenny is back for its tenth season, and “King of Suckers” picks up where we left off last time with Tanis’s energy drink launch gone awry. If you’ll recall, in the ninth season finale, the Brodude Rep threatened to revoke the Kerry County Eagles’ championship status because not everyone on the team is Native. We learned Shoresy mixed his DNA sample with Jonesy and Reilly’s, so they all appear to be triplets.

While NDN NRG circled the drain due to Brodude, Anik told Katy about her new beau — Dierks. Outside of MoD3an’s, Wayne reunited with his former love, Marie-Fred.

“King of Suckers” fills in the blanks regarding what transpired after last season’s finale, with Letterkenny‘s signature biting humor, fast-paced one-liners and take-no-prisoners attitude. There’s a good scrap, and, thankfully, Dierks gets what’s coming to him a second time. It’s not the show’s best outing, but, instead, it serves its purpose regarding the plot.

Ready to delve into “King of Suckers”? Let’s get to it.

We open with a standard Letterkenny “cold open” — Wayne (Jared Keeso) and Daryl (Nathan Dales) deliver back-to-back jokes with their usual nonchalance. Wayne utters one of my favorite lines in said cold open: “Life is a highway, and Twitter is a cult.” There’s a bit of foreshadowing for the season when Wayne talks about receiving a prostate exam. We know there’s one episode wherein the Letterkenny men get head-to-toe physicals.

And who needs church when you can pray for a new Shania Twain album at home? Amen to that.

Now, we fast forward “a month and a bit since the launch of NDN NRG.” Wayne, Daryl and Squirrely Dan (K. Trevor Wilson) chat with Tyson (Jay Bertin), Joint Boy (Joel Gagne), Reilly (Dylan Playfair) and Jonesy (Andrew Herr) about scraps and suckers and such.

Wayne is the “king of suckers,” and we learn he fought Dierks upon the latter’s return to Letterkenny. Jimmy Dickskin (Alex McCooeye) wants all the deets, so we rewind time for a good ole fashioned Wayne story.

Back at the launch, Tanis (Kaniehtiio Horn) decides to chat with the Brodude Rep (Vanessa Matsui) about striking a deal. Reilly and Jonesy search for Tassie and Cassie, or Cassie and Tassie.

Meanwhile, Squirrely Dan, Daryl, Katy (Michelle Mylett), Gail (Lisa Codrington) and Rosie (Clark Backo) square off against Dierks (Tyler Hynes) and Anik (Kim Cloutier). Dan and Daryl are itching for a scrap, although Katy doesn’t believe Dierks is worth it. Anik disapproves of Dierks calling forth his cousins to fight the Letterkenny boys, but here we are.

Wayne and his crew strike first after diving deep into Dutch-Michigan hyphenated names and how much Dierks’ cousins loathe chatting before a scrap (even though they’re unaware that they’re talking). Dierks utilizes the skirmish as an opportunity to escape, but Stewart (Tyler Johnston) and Roald (Evan Stern) block his path. Well, more like Roald’s crotch impedes the way.

Wayne seizes Dierks and drags him before Katy. We see Katy loom above him in all her stoic glory. While the camera cuts away, I’d like to believe she kicked Dierks in the family jewels.

Next, Reilly and Jonesy call Shoresy (Keeso), who confesses tampering with their DNA samples and screwing Kerry County Eagles out of their championship title. Oh, and he’s chilling in a hot tub with Tassie and Cassie (Cassie and Tassie?). Admittedly, sometimes I feel this bit between Shoresy and the Hockey boys runs past its expiration date. There is such a thing as beating a dead horse. That said, Keeso’s voice for Shoresy is fantastic.

After their usual “F*ck you, Shoresy!” with Shoresy hurling “your mom” jokes in retaliation, the boys hang up in defeat.

Later, in the present, Tanis returns with the Brodude Rep and Anik in tow. NDN NRG and Brodude will now join forces for a new venture. Katy and Rosie emerge as the “faces” of the companies’ collaboration — at least temporarily. Enter: Skodude, the latest collab from NDN NRG and Brodude.

Joint Boy and Tyson are also Tanis’s male models, while Stewart and Roald provide the sick beats. Reilly and Jonesy get to sport all the merch. Gailer calls everyone inside for the official relaunch.

Once everyone’s inside MoD3an’s, we see Marie-Fred (Magalie Lépine Blondeau), dressed differently from the ninth season finale, enter the premises.

“King of Suckers” boasts some solid punchlines and showcases part of what makes Letterkenny enjoyable — its small-town, tongue-in-cheek charm. This episode is essential from a plot standpoint, but there is a certain hollowness to it that I don’t remember seeing in previous seasons. Perhaps it’s the shadow of the pandemic, or maybe it’s because Glen is sorely missing from the action.

It’s no secret that I’m a Glen gal, and Jacob Tierney‘s absence from the last season save one appearance is noticeable. Bring him back, you cowards! On the same note, we need more Skid shenanigans. I didn’t get my filling of Strt and Roald in this outing.

Regardless, even Letterkenny at its worst is still better than most sitcoms.

Season 10 of Letterkenny is now streaming on Hulu.
