The John Wick universe expands with the first spinoff, Ballerina. Lionsgate has tapped Underworld director Len Wiseman to direct. According to Deadline, the story focuses on a female assassin seeking revenge against the people who killed her family.
Shay Haten wrote the script for Ballerina. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski produce the film, with John Wick star Keanu Reeves an executive producer.
The Ballerina story was set up in John Wick 3. John (Reeves) goes home to ask for help getting out of New York City. His home is a school for ballerinas and wrestlers run by The Director, played by Anjelica Huston. Deadline also reports the first ballerina in John Wick 3 is the primary character in the Ballerina film. The credits list Unity Phelan as that ballarina, but something tells me that they are looking for a bigger name for this role.
Honestly I was hoping for a Halle Berry movie. Her character in John Wick 3 is so strong and so interesting. She shows that a woman can thrive in this world. But I think introducing a new character coming from the same background as John Wick will be just as interesting
Ballerina is currently in development. GGA will keep an eye on the developments of this franchise.
