Max von Sydow has passed beyond the veil. He was 90 years old.
According to AP, Von Sydow’s agent released the news, noting that the actor died Sunday night in France. “It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow,” his agent’s statement read. The actor was in close to 200 films and television series, with his career expanding all the way back to the 1940s.
One of his most memorable roles included Father Merrin in The Exorcist, a horror film that quickly became a classic. Other popular films on his resume include Flash Gordon, The Seventh Seal, Dune, Minority Report, and Shutter Island. Modern audiences might know him best from Game of Thrones for his role as the Three-Eyed Raven. Or perhaps his brief role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Lor San Tekka.
The entertainment world lost a bit of magic with his passing. In his long, incredible career, he was able to play Emperors, Priests, Men, Aliens, and even Jesus Christ. A staple in sci-fi and fantasy franchises, he will certainly be missed by the geek world.
We here at Geek Girl Authority offer our condolences to the Von Sydow family during their time of mourning.
