Lauren Cohan is returning to The Walking Dead

After months of speculation, Lauren Cohan has confirmed that she will return to The Walking Dead for season nine.  Entertainment Weekly broke the news Tuesday night during an interview with Cohan at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.  Cohan’s current deal is to appear in six of the first eight of TWD

Cohan attended CinemaCon to promote her movie Mile 22 with Mark Wahlberg.  When asked about her status on The Walking Dead, Cohan stated she is going back.

“There’s a lot of Maggie story to tell.  You know we’re not allowed to tell you anything, but it’s good”

Cohan has been in contract negotiations with AMC and had been holding out for a raise.  During this time of uncertainty, Cohan signed on for an ABC Pilot, Whiskey Cavalier along side Scott Foley.  Cohan is playing CIA operative Francesca ‘Frankie’ Trowbridge, code name Fiery Tribune.  The network has not yet ordered a full season.  This means that Cohan is free to start filming TWD when production on season nine starts next week.  If Whiskey Cavalier is picked up, then AMC will have to revisit Cohan’s contract and the future of Maggie Rhee.  Of course if ABC passes on the pilot, then Cohan will be free to finish out the TWD season.

This is good news for TWD.  Maggie was set up for possible confrontation with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) in season nine.  At the end of the season eight finale, Maggie was visibly upset that Rick did not kill villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). She and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) vowed to show Rick and girlfriend Michonne (Danai Gurira) just how wrong they are about that decision.  Maggie is definitely out for vengeance for her husband Glenn’s death at the hands of Negan.

As a fan, this is great news. Maggie Rhee has become an important character in the story. She has grown from a simple farm girl to a smart and strategic leader.  I’m excited to see what they have in store for her character when The Walking Dead returns next fall.
