The latest Kong: Skull Island trailer debuted during Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and we finally get a good look at the King.

The first trailer dropped during San Diego Comic-Con and we got the normal doom and gloom with a good dose of “we aren’t going to show you much, but here’s a tease” mystery.  It was told from the view of Samuel L Jackson‘s character, Lieutenant Colonel Packard, so we went heavy from the military side of things.  However, this new trailer gives us more of everything including what the visitors did to rile up the King of Skull Island.  But we also get the natives, the other giant animals and insects that live on the island, and a good look at the big bads, the Skull Crawlers.

With the success of Godzilla, Kong is set to be the next step in the interconnected movie world of giant monsters.  Godzilla 2 is scheduled to release on June 8, 2018 with Godzilla vs Kong coming to theaters sometime in 2020.  Don’t think that will be the last stop either, Warner Brothers and Legendary are throwing everything they have at this idea in the hopes they hit on a winning franchise formula.  If Kong does well, be prepared to see more films with Rodan, Mother, King Ghidorah, and other famous creatures.

The biggest hurtle is the suspension of disbelief. In the modern world, where very little is left unexplored or undiscovered, making the audience believe these creatures are out there somewhere will be the real movie magic.  So far they’ve done a decent job with Godzilla, staying true to the mythology but giving us a believable enough reason as to why we hadn’t seen the giant lizard before now.  With Kong they are doing the same thing, a creepy island shrouded always in mist, making satellite observation impossible.  It’s just enough that we can suspend the disbelief.  Of course what kicks off this trill ride is a joint military and scientific expedition to discover what exactly inhabits the island.

Kong: Skull Island invades theaters March 10, 2017.
