Lakeith Stanfield Set to Star in PRINCE OF CATS Adaptation

Today Deadline reported on an adaptation that sounds incredibly interesting. Prince of Cats, a graphic novel based on a classic story we all know, has been picked up by Legendary. Not only that, but they have a star attached. The ultimately talented Lakeith Stanfield gets top billing for the project. Here’s what we know about the film so far!

Prince of Cats is actually an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. But it doesn’t focus on Romeo or Juliet – it actually focuses on the main antagonist of the play, Tybalt. Set in 1980s New York, the story balances the original prose from William Shakespeare with a few additions. The graphic novel was originally in print over on Vertigo in 2012 but later moved to Image Comics. Swords, drugs, and sex splash across the pages of the novel by Ron Wimberly. Others attached to the project are Selwyn Sefyu Hinds penning the script with Janet and Kate Zucker of Zucker Productions producing.

I’m actually in love with the thought of Stanfield playing Tybalt. The role fits him like a glove, it just really works. Especially given the setting in 1980s Brooklyn. In complete honesty, I haven’t heard of the graphic novel until today but I’m immediately drawn to it. Retellings of Shakespeare’s work can either go incredibly well or incredibly poorly. But this seems like it could really work. And really, if Baz Luhrmann‘s Romeo + Juliet worked, I can only see this film doing better. I’m just really excited about this project! We’ll all have to watch and see where this film goes.
