About a year ago, we found out that James Gunn had cast Kurt Russell in his latest installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. We also had a solid idea that Russell would play Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) dad. The biggest question we had was who was Russell playing — who is Star-Lord’s dad?
Well, San Diego Comic Con answered that question for us. Ego the Living Planet, first seen in Thor #132. And if you’re confused by that answer and have questions — yes. We said planet and we mean planet. Ego is a planet that is alive, fully conscious, with eyes and a mouth and able to will himself through space as a person would.
So how is a full sized planet able to lie down with a woman and create a child named Peter Jason Quill? That bit is uncertain, but apparently, as we learned at SDCC, it has something to do with Ego figuring out how to take the form of a smaller being due to his desire to experience that form of life.
Now that the planet-sized cat is out of the proverbial bag, we can finally start talking to Mr. Russell about his role and what he thinks of the upcoming movie, which will hit screens May of 2017. That is exactly what Collider did when they caught up with him and started things off asking what he thought of the footage he saw at Comic-Con.
“I was impressed with the stuff that I saw at Comic-Con, but they didn’t show you everything [laughs]. It’s a very complex story, and they really get into it. This is going to be one of the more—probably for Marvel, it’s more connected to human issues, family issues, parental issues, and issues that sons and daughters have with their moms and dads and their family tree, where they come from. I just think it’s going to be an interesting— Peter’s character in this one, he’s got dilemmas and he’s got decisions to make that are not just about whether to save that thing or that person. This is about finding out who you are, where you come from, and where you’re going.”
So, apparently, when we go to the theatre expecting to see a giant space epic spectacle with lots of lasers and spaceships and weird alien beings — we’ll get all of that, but we’ll get a good strong dose of complex family dynamics and themes, with Peter Quill struggling to make the right decision when, maybe, there isn’t a “right” decision to make.
Russell then went on to say of the SDCC footage, “I thought it looked great too. I was really impressed with it, really impressed with it.” In fact, he knows the script, he knows what they shot, knows where the story goes and what to expect from the whole thing, but as he says, “I mean, believe me, from knowing the script, to see that and what he did with that sequence, I’m excited to see the movie [laughs]. I think it’s going to be really good.”
