The Klara and the Sun adaptation is already in early development from Sony’s 3000 pictures. David Heyman is producing the project for Heyday Films. Heyman has producer credits for the Paddington films as well as the Harry Potter film franchise. Additionally, Dahvi Waller will write the original draft of the screenplay, and author Kazuo Ishiguro is on board as an executive producer.

Klara and the Sun is Ishiguro’s eighth novel, initially published in 2021. It follows a robot named Klara, a solar-powered “Artificial Friend” built to keep humans from getting lonely. When a sickly child named Josie chooses Klara as her companion, the two grow close as they make their way in the world. The novel was longlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize and the 2022 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. It also appeared on best books of 2021 lists in The Washington Post and The Times.
