Andrea Berloff will be making her directorial debut with a comic book film adaption! The Kitchen was a Vertigo comics miniseries by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle. According to THR, the female-driven mob drama will be directed by the Straight Outta Compton co-writer.

Don’t know The Kitchen? Let’s get you up to speed. Set in 1970’s Hell’s Kitchen New York, 3 gangster’s wives take over the Irish mob when their husbands are killed. In only 8 issues, the comic focused on the women and their story. Penned by Ollie Masters with inks and pencils by Ming Doyle, the first issue debuted on November 12, 2014.

Berloff is said to have already started writing the script. Impressing New Line with her vision of the story, they’ve given her the directors chair. Berloff is new to Hollywood, having started as an actress, she moved on to writing films. She penned the script for Oliver Stone‘s disaster film World Trade Center, Mel Gibson‘s starring film Blood Father and the Taken Jr film, Sleepless starring Jamie Foxx. She was nominated for several awards for her work on Straight Outta Compton including a Satellite Awards for Best Original Screenplay.
