FX released the official trailer for their Kindred adaptation coming to Hulu this winter, and it looks incredible. Based on Octavia Butler‘s 1979 book of the same title, it’s the first of many Butler works coming to the screen. Read on for our breakdown.

The trailer opens with a black woman named Dana (Mallori Johnson) running through the woods at night. She’s wearing a robe, breathing heavily and clearly terrified. When she stops, she commands herself to wake up. And wake up she does, screaming in a modern room flooded with daylight.

Her husband tries to convince her she was just sleep-walking until he witnesses her disappear before his eyes. Dana then flashes back and forth between her home and a plantation in 1815. While Dana gets more and more entangled with the past, the neighbors and the police in the present grow concerned about all of the screaming coming from her house.

The Kindred adaptation also stars Micah Stock as Dana’s husband Kevin and Ryan Kwanten of True Blood as Thomas Weylin, the plantation owner and slave master. The rest of the cast includes Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith and David Alexander Kaplan.

Kindred is the first of Butler’s works to be adapted among four studios. HBO’s Fledgling series comes from Lovecraft Country writers and co-executive producers Jonathan I. Kidd and Sonya Winton-Odamtten. A24 has a film in the works based on Parable of the Sower, while Amazon Studios is developing Wild Seed with writer Nnedi Okorafor and a show based on the novel Dawn led by Ava DuVernay.

Kindred will be available to stream on Hulu beginning Tuesday, December 13. Octavia Butler is one of my favorite authors, and I’m thrilled for her work to get some new attention. How excited are you to see Kindred on your screen? Watch the full trailer, and let us know below!
