Killing Eve Season 4 Episode 4 It's Agony and I'm Ravenous

DISCLAIMER: This recap of the Killing Eve episode “It’s Agony and I’m Ravenous” has spoilers. Proceed at your peril.

Sorry, baby! Killing Eve‘s fourth episode, “It’s Agony and I’m Ravenous,” is a flirty and fun outing laden with cheeky banter and its signature cat-and-mouse antics. After a somewhat rocky start, the series is finding its footing again.

Killing Eve thrives on intriguing character pairings and the stellar performances from its ensemble. I’m enjoying the new character dynamics this season, i.e., Eve and Hélène’s repartee and now Villanelle and Carolyn’s interactions. While I miss seeing Villanelle and Konstantin together, I’m also digging his new relationship with Pam, especially considering how vastly different she is from Villanelle.

This episode provides some answers and poses new questions as we approach the endgame of this phenomenal series. I don’t want it to end.

Ready to dig deep into “It’s Agony and I’m Ravenous”? Let’s get to it.

We open with Villanelle (Jodie Comer) in jail at Eve’s command. She demands she get her requisite phone call. Meanwhile, Eve (Sandra Oh) meets with Hélène (Camille Cottin) in a lavish theater in The West End. Hélène wants to know the name of the high-ranking Twelve member Eve incessantly teases — Lars Meier. After a bit of cat-and-mouse verbal chess, the pair decide to chase the Lars lead. Oh and Cottin are mesmerizing together.

Then, we see Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) and Pam (Anjana Vasan) in Margate for the latter’s first mission. Konstantin gives Pam the lowdown once they reach her hotel room. He asserts they’re not friends; he’s Pam’s boss. Konstantin only has space in his heart for one adopted daughter, a.k.a. Villanelle.

Pam tells Konstantin she’s brilliant at embalming, and she’s only killed once (her brother). Konstantin guffaws in his usual way; his laugh is one of my favorite things about him. He orders Pam to meet him on the pier in one hour.

Yusuf (Robert Gilbert) gives Eve the motherload of breakthroughs regarding Lars Meier. He finds a photo on Fernanda’s Instagram featuring Lars. Boom!

Hélène visits Villanelle in jail and asks our fave assassin what she wants. Hélène reminds Villanelle that nobody leaves The Twelve. Once you’re in, you’re in for life. Villanelle confesses she wants excessive money, which prompts Hélène to free her. Hélène gives Villanelle her next target, sealed in an envelope.

Later, Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) arrives at the safe house in Havana. Benita (Anna-Maria Everett), the housemaid, introduces Carolyn to The Twelve torture victim, Rustem (Sebastian Abineri). The torturer removed Rustem’s toes and shoved them up his nose. Oof.

Meanwhile, Pam reunites with Konstantin on the pier, where he asks her to push a random woman into the water. Pam freezes, unable to carry out the task. Konstantin ridicules her. When he notices she’s unresponsive, he urges Pam to go home.

Next, Eve and Yusuf run Lars’ image through their system, and it matches with a photo of him from 1979. Eve pinpoints the photographer, who resides in France, and calls her while faking a British accent. Eve asks about the picture, but the photographer offers brusque responses.

Carolyn attempts to elicit answers from Rustem, but he refuses, citing his blatant misogyny. Konstantin calls Hélène, questioning why Pam is his assignee. He asks Hélène to reinstate him as a mayor in Russia, and he’ll keep his nose to the grindstone. But Hélène reminds him about Paul; The Twelve member Carolyn killed last season, a.k.a. the man Konstantin framed for millions of dollars.

Then, Villanelle kidnaps Carolyn and stuffs her in the boot of the latter’s expensive car. Carolyn lets slip a memory of Villanelle as a child, and, as a response, Villanelle knocks Carolyn unconscious. It’s abundantly clear that Carolyn is Villanelle’s next hit.

Pam visits the local carnival and meets Darren (Josh Zaré), a carny who seems smitten with Pam at first sight. Pam boards a ride and releases her inhibitions, laughing gleefully amid her time on it. It’s utterly adorable.

Carolyn wakes with a splitting headache from where Villanelle smacked her with a wrench. She regales Villanelle with an anecdote from the latter’s childhood. When Villanelle was in the orphanage, she wrapped her bracelet tightly around a little girl’s finger while she was sleeping. When the child woke the following day, her finger was black. The said finger was amputated. Carolyn reveals that Villanelle asked to see the removed finger.

Villanelle interprets this story as a sign that she was always evil. It’s an innate trait. However, Carolyn believes there’s good and evil in everyone, and life’s more about excelling with your gifts. Carolyn inquires if she can eat a sandwich before Villanelle kills her.

Villanelle and Carolyn return to the safe house, where Benita cooks a scrumptious meal.

Meanwhile, Eve visits the French photographer’s shop, and we learn that her daughter Annie (Caroline Lonq) runs it now. She allows Eve time to peruse the photos therein. Eve finds more pictures of Lars and purchases them.

Carolyn and Villanelle enjoy Benita’s cooking. Villanelle unleashes the solid-gold line about how people “fart with their mouths” in response to Carolyn’s preceding bit about humans being gasbags. I love these two together.

Carolyn brings Villanelle to Rustem, hoping this interaction spurs Villanelle into action and rejuvenates her. Villanelle interrogates Rustem, and he initially remains tight-lipped. After all, like Carolyn, Villanelle is a woman. But Villanelle whips out cheese wire and starts slicing off his fingers, changing Rustem’s tune. She demands he describe the torturer.

After revealing scant details regarding his torturer and telling her to go to El Hombre de Dos Caras, Villanelle stabs Rustem in the heart, quickly killing him. You can tell by the look on her face that she’s enjoying this.

Next, Pam calls Konstantin and informs him that someone mugged her. He agrees to meet her on the pier. Suddenly, Pam pushes Konstantin into the water, which thrills him. Then, Pam orders him not to underestimate her again.

While dining at El Hombre de Dos Caras, Villanelle and Carolyn play “Truth or Dare.” Carolyn asks Villanelle what attracts her to Eve, and Villanelle repeats what Martin told her in last week’s episode: she enjoys the power and control she has over Eve.

Their game abruptly ends when Carolyn spots Lars Meier (Ingvar Sigurdsson) — she knows him. Carolyn tells Lars she thought he was dead, spurring him to flee the establishment. Villanelle chases him from the restaurant, but he boards a scooter and gets away.

Meanwhile, Eve meets with Hélène at the latter’s behest, and she shaves Hélène’s legs while asking questions about working for The Twelve. Hélène insists she takes “nobodies” and imbues them with power. Eve refers to them as Hélène’s “fembots.”

Then, Eve removes her clothes and climbs into the bathtub with Hélène, as one does when they’re playing verbal chess with a trained killer. The VillanEve fans are losing it right now!

Later, Carolyn reveals to Villanelle how she knows Lars: they were lovers. Villanelle realizes she didn’t get to finish giving Carolyn a dare, so she dares Carolyn to play air guitar. Folks, Carolyn doles out a mean air guitar. She should go on the road!

Villanelle apologizes for trying to kill Carolyn, and Carolyn orders our fave psychopathic assassin to behave while she flies to Berlin to track down Lars. While Carolyn packs, she receives a call from Vlad, but she refrains from answering it.

After bathtime, Eve and Hélène eat soup while watching TV. Hélène drops the bomb that she released Villanelle from prison, much to Eve’s dismay. Hélène believes Eve enjoys playing with Villanelle because it makes her feel alive. Eve enjoys flirting with danger and the heartbreaking, gut-wrenching passion it elicits.

So, in response, Eve kisses Hélène and the pair makeout. We see shots of Villanelle alone at the Cuba safe house spliced in between images of the steamy snog session. Eve silently departs after she’s had her fill.

“It’s Agony and I’m Ravenous” harbors everything we love about Killing Eve — sharp dialogue, nuanced performances, delightful character dynamics and gore aplenty. Even though Eve and Villanelle don’t have scenes together in this episode, their hold on each other is clear as day. Their paths will collide sooner rather than later, given how similar they are. I love watching Villanelle embrace her true nature while Eve seemingly does the same.

Do you think Hélène will order Villanelle to kill Eve? How will she react when she finds out Villanelle failed to murder Carolyn? What about the looming threat in Scotland that Carolyn almost pursued? Join me next week while I recap Killing Eve here on Geek Girl Authority.
