In a sad shock for legions of Batman devotees, Kevin Conroy died Thursday, November 10, 2022. The beloved voice actor passed at age 66 after a short battle with cancer. While he is best known as the eponymous star of Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1996), Conroy continued to play the role of Batman and Bruce Wayne for the intervening 30 years. Across multiple mediums and decades, Conroy spoke through Batman’s voice to countless fans.

The Animated Series

Many of Conroy’s fans were introduced to his work through Batman: The Animated Series. The mid-90s animated adaptation, developed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian, is considered by some to be the definitive onscreen adaptation of the DC comics source material.

In addition to Conroy’s legendary performance as the eponymous hero, the cast included Mark Hamill as the Joker. The official obituary quotes Hamill on acting opposite Conroy:

“It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it. His rhythms and subtleties, tones and delivery – that all also helped inform my performance. He was the ideal partner – it was such a complementary, creative experience. I couldn’t have done it without him. He will always be my Batman.”
