Just over a month after announcing that Keanu Reeves would be headlining Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of Devil in the White City, Variety breaks the news that he is no longer attached to the project. Sources told the site that Reeves has exited the project, but there is no report on why. Hulu and Reeves’s Reps have not responded to Variety‘s request for comment.

The upcoming thriller series is Hulu’s adaptation of Erik Larson‘s novel Devil in the White City. The show was first put into development in 2019, and Hulu officially ordered the series in August of this year. It was soon after that Reeves’ name was announced in conjunction with the role of Daniel H. Burnham. This would have been Reeves’ first major American TV role. But the fates couldn’t seem to align, and we are left waiting to see what American TV series will claim that title.
The official logline for Devil in the White City states that the show “tells the true story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago’s World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious ‘Murder Castle’ built in the Fair’s shadow.” Larson’s novel and Hulu’s series are based on the very true and terrifying story of Dr. Henry Howard Holmes.

Hulu has yet to announce who will be replacing Reeves in the role. We also don’t know who will be taking on the role of Dr. H. H. Holmes. Currently, Martin Scorsese, Rick Yorn, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson serve as executive producers alongside Stacey Sher, Sam Shaw and Mark Lafferty. Shaw is adapting the book for the screen and will serve as showrunner.
