Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we spotlight strong women and nonbinary folks who inspire us. This includes fictional characters in geeky media and creators as well. They are a prime example of empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for Letterkenny, particularly Katy’s arc. Figure it out, bud, and proceed at your peril.
Katy
Fast Facts:
Katy (Michelle Mylett) is one of Letterkenny’s hicks and the younger sister of Wayne (Jared Keeso). She works on a farm, where she resides in a farmhouse with her brother. Besides the farm, Katy tries modeling as a means of employment. Eventually, she quits after finding it to be a vapid industry. Little is known about her upbringing, save that her parents wouldn’t let her and Wayne have birthday parties and their fondness for Uncle Eddie. Katy usually spends time with Wayne and the other hicks, Daryl (Nathan Dales) and Squirrely Dan (K. Trevor Wilson).
At the start of the series, Katy is in a polyamorous relationship with two codependent hockey players, Reilly (Dylan Playfair) and Jonesy (Andrew Herr). She rebounds from them with Stewart (Tyler Johnston), one of the town’s skids. However, that relationship doesn’t pan out. Katy breaks up with him for giving her the silent treatment. Later in the show, she hooks up with Mrs. McMurray (Melanie Scrofano) at a party and dates an American named Dierks (Tyler Hynes). She severs ties with Dierks after he cheats on her.

Throughout the show, Katy doesn’t take guff from anyone. She frequently puts disrespectful folks in their place with a swift kick to the groin. Sometimes a punch, if it’s warranted. In Season 11, Katy, along with Wayne’s girlfriend Rosie (Clark Backo) and Bonnie McMurray (Kamilla Kowal), seeks out the person responsible for leaking a nude photo of Gail (Lisa Codrington), the proprietor of MoD3an’s. When she learns who it is, she kicks him in the family jewels.
The Real Deal:
Katy is assertive and fiercely independent. She wastes no time obsessing over what people think. She doesn’t suffer fools and isn’t afraid to knock someone down a few pegs. She’s also immensely loyal to her loved ones. Katy possesses a sharp intellect; she can dole out clever one-liners with the best of them (and is a spelling bee champ, to boot). She values honesty and doesn’t sugarcoat the truth.
She undoubtedly comes off as intimidating to onlookers, but beneath her ostensibly cool exterior is a heart of gold. She spends a lot of time poking fun at her fellow hicks; however, she’d gladly fall on her sword for them. She’s always willing to lend a helping hand when necessary.
Why She Matters:
Katy is a multifaceted, complex woman marching to the beat of her drum. She’s bisexual, giving much-needed bi representation on TV (She’ll always carry a torch for Bonnie McMurray. Who doesn’t, though?). She’s a bona fide badass who’s comfortable in her body and doesn’t pay any mind to what others say about her. We could all stand to adopt some of that don’t-give-a-f*ck attitude.
So, be like Katy. Don’t be afraid to go after what you want. Stand tall and confidently in who you are. Love who you love. When a friend asks for help, you help them. Lastly, never shy away from kicking groins if words fail. Pitter-patter, let’s get at’er.
