Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.

DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for Marvel’s Hawkeye.

Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) was born and raised in New York City with her parents, Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) and Derek (Brian d’Arcy James). When she was ten years old, Kate bore witness to the heroics of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) amid the Battle of New York. Unfortunately, she lost her father during that battle.

After her dad’s death, Kate trained extensively in archery and combat sports, winning awards for her talents.

While attending a swanky party with her mother and Jack Duquesne, a.k.a. Swordsman (Tony Dalton), Kate stumbles upon a shady black market auction wherein the Ronin suit, Ronin blade and a Rolex is up for grabs.

Kate dons the Ronin suit when the Tracksuit Mafia attacks and inadvertently winds up on the news when she rescues Lucky the Pizza Dog while still wearing the said suit. Clint discovers Kate Bishop, clad in his costume, on national television.

An Archery Duo for the Ages

Clint attempts to get the suit back from her, but now the Tracksuit Mafia has her number. Kate suspects Eleanor’s fiancé, Jack, might be the perpetrator behind Armand Duquesne III’s murder, so she surreptitiously investigates him. The Tracksuit Mafia captures Clint and Kate, and they come face-to-face with Maya Lopez, a.k.a. Echo (Alaqua Cox), a higher-up in the Mafia.

While attempting to keep the Mafia at bay, Kate discovers Eleanor shares a connection with the Tracksuit Mafia from Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), dispatched to murder Clint. Kate sees a photo of Eleanor with Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), and she learns her mother was behind Armand’s murder, and she hired Yelena to kill Clint.

Kate and Clint square off against the Mafia one last time, and Kate finally gets to use Hawkeye’s famous “trick arrows.” Kate takes on Fisk herself to protect Eleanor. However, once she overpowers Kingpin, Kate calls the police on her mother.

After definitively beating the baddies, Clint invites Kate over to the Barton home for Christmas. They torch the Ronin suit together, and Clint helps Kate develop a superhero moniker.

She now has the outfit for it!

The Real Deal:

Kate is the real deal. She possesses a solid moral compass with intelligence aplenty. Clint believes she’s courageous to a fault, but I think an overabundance of bravery is a prerequisite for being a superhero. Who else is going to run headfirst into danger?

Kate’s immensely observant, with a keen eye for pinpointing details others usually don’t see. She’s also confident, but that confidence never tilts toward cockiness (although sometimes it’s dangerously close). She cares deeply about her loved ones and will go the extra mile to protect them.

Throughout Hawkeye, Kate matures, learning the harsh lessons and responsibilities accompanying the hero business. She makes difficult yet necessary decisions in the name of justice, notably calling for her mother’s arrest.

She kicks copious amounts of ass and is second only to Clint as one of the best archers in the world (she might surpass him one day).

Why She Matters:

Hawkeye Season 1 Episode 6 So This Is Christmas? Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton

Why does Kate matter? She’s a badass young hero who believes in doing what’s right and just. Kate’s not without faults, but she quickly adapts, learning from her mistakes while maintaining her enthusiastic personality. Kate even has her mother arrested because of the latter’s extensive crimes. She could have easily let Eleanor’s work with the Mafia slide. However, her moral compass won out.

So, be like Kate Bishop. Be courageous in the face of grave danger. Do what’s right, even when the odds perpetually multiply. Never lose your childlike enthusiasm. Protect your loved ones however you can. When presented with an opportunity to join forces with a severely underrated Avenger, seize it.
