Yesterday Kevin Hart revealed the first official photo for the upcoming Jumanji movie staring him, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black, I wrote a little bit about it here. The photo has drawn a lot of criticism, but nothing has been louder than the criticism heaped on what Karen Gillan is wearing, or rather, the lack of what she is wearing.
All the men are fully garbed and geared as you should be for a jungle expedition, meanwhile Gillan looks like she should be starring in the original Tomb Raider games. No, that isn’t a compliment. I adore Lara Croft, Tomb Raider is one of my all time favorite game franchises, but when I compare a costume to her original look, that is not a compliment. When a woman goes into battle, or exploring, or into the jungle, or anywhere, she should be appropriately attired. This mean no boob armor, no bare midriff (we do not have magical uterus powers), we need actual, practical protection.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to Instagram yesterday in an attempt to diffuse the situation, to no avail. This morning, Karen Gillan took to Twitter to further defend the choice. She promises the “payoff is worth it”. She even goes so far as to say her clothing is “child sized”. She seems to understand the frustration and concern.
Ok, I adore you, Karen Gillan. Not in a creepy way. In the way where I respect your body of work, I’ve seen most of what you’ve done, and I love you in everything. So I’ll put away my pitchfork and patiently wait to see if it’s worth it or not. However, the fire is going to be twice as hot if the payoff is, in fact, not worth it.
Jumanji! Yes I'm wearing child sized clothes and YES there is a reason! The pay off is worth it, I promise! #Jumanji pic.twitter.com/qBshnhwV6K
