Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following article contains spoilers for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Joy Wang “Jobu Tupaki”
Fast Facts:

Joy (Stephanie Hsu) is the daughter of Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) and Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan). At the beginning of Everything Everywhere All at Once, she has a struggling relationship with her mother not accepting her girlfriend Becky (Tallie Medel) and her life choices. As Evelyn learns more about the multiverse, she uncovers the truth of what the Alpha-Evelyn did to her Alpha-Joy.
Her mind was splintered after being pushed too hard to “verse-jump,” and she is forced to now experience all the universes at once, thus becoming Jobu Tupaki. She learns to verse-jump and manipulates matter at will through extensive training and sheer willpower. Alpha-Waymond believes that she has the power to kill everyone and everything if allowed to continue down her path.
But Jobu Tupaki didn’t create the everything bagel to destroy everyone else but herself. All she wanted to do was find an Evelyn who could understand her beforehand. In the end, Evelyn is able to convince her not to throw her life away because, in every universe, she will always choose Joy. In the end, their relationship is still a bit strained, but they are moving forward.
The Real Deal:
Joy “Jobu Tupaki” is the real deal. As we watch her jump through the different versions of herself, she shows off her fighting, acting and charismatic skills. She may be a threat to the multiverse, but deep down, she is just a girl trying to get her mother to understand her. While Everything Everywhere All at Once heavily focuses on Evelyn’s journey, we had the opportunity to see how Joy is affected as well. Jobu Tupaki only wants to find a mother who truly understands her. Even the main Evelyn’s Joy feels the same way.
Why She Matters:

So why does Joy matter? While her alter-verse-ego, Jobu Tupaki, may serve as the villain of Everything Everywhere All at Once, her journey is one that many can relate to. Joy just wants her parents, her mother, in particular, to accept her. As children, we can be sympathetic to Joy’s journey of wanting to make her mother proud but still be her own person and travel her own path. They may not always agree, but Joy still wants to try to have a relationship with her.
So, be like Joy. Strive to make those around you proud but always remember to walk your own path and tap into your true potential.
