It’s a sad day for fans of Batgirl. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joss Whedon has decided to exit the film based on the superheroine. The director had been signed on to write and direct the film but it seems things have “failed”, as Whedon puts it. What exactly went wrong? Well, it all appears to be either a case of writer’s block or the realization that he had nothing he wanted to say.
In a statement, the writer/director spoke about his gratefulness to WB for giving him the opportunity to create the film. But it seems he didn’t have anything in the end.
Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to Geoff [Johns] and Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?

It’s such a shame that one of the most beloved Bat-characters won’t have her moment to shine. At least not at the present time. THR reports that after a year, Whedon hadn’t figured out what the Batgirl movie should be. Which, to me, seems almost baffling. There’s so many great stories out there that he had a plethora to work with. I would say that he got intimidated by the massive success of Wonder Woman and realized he could not pull off a story of that magnitude. Perhaps crumbling under pressure? This is, of course, just a theory I have.
I was really looking forward to seeing a Batgirl movie but alas, we have to wait. Frankly, I wanted to get The Killing Joke animated film out of my head. But it’s sad to know we currently don’t have that to look forward to. Fingers crossed that someone else will take the mantle. Can someone get Gail Simone on the line to write the script?
