Out of the blue, like a bolt of lightning and completely unexpected, Josh Brolin has been cast in the highly-sought, highly-coveted role of the gruff, time-traveling soldier son of the X-Men leader CyclopsCable. Previously, it had been rumored that the favorite for the role had been Michael Shannon, with Stranger Things sheriff David Harbour right behind him as the second favorite.

But now we have confirmation that Cable will indeed be played by Josh Brolin. If you’re not familiar with this actor, he’s currently filming for Marvel Studios in the role of the super duper biggest bad of bad guys, Thanos the Mad Titan. With that said, that makes Brolin an interesting choice since he’s already so prominently featured in a competing studio’s giant comic book franchise. One can’t help but wonder if this choice was intentional from Fox Studios to throw a bit of casting shade at their competitor Marvel.

The role has been highly sought due partly to the previous success of Deadpool, which was released last February, but also partially due to the fact that this particular film will help launch the X-Force film which will, in turn, become its own franchise. This would be why The Hollywood Reporter, who had an exclusive on the story, have him in a four-picture deal. By our thinking, this would be Deadpool 2, X-Force, X-Force 2 and possibly Deadpool 3.

In fact, by our thinking, it would not be completely unheard of to see Cable appear in Josh Boone’s soon-to-be-filming movie, the New Mutants, due mostly to the fact that all of those characters all eventually form that mutant strike force as lead by Cable.
