The High Sparrow will trade his simple hovel in for an opulent palace! As reported by Deadline, Jonathan Pryce will join The Crown as Prince Philip. The Game of Thrones actor will portray the prince opposite Imelda Staunton, the next iteration of Queen Elizabeth II.
Now, Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies both precede Pryce in the role. As for the Queen, actresses Claire Foy and Olivia Colman precede Staunton in donning the royal crown. Pryce and Staunton will join The Crown‘s bejeweled roster for Seasons Five and Six. Princess Margaret will be portrayed by Lesley Manville, who was preceded by Vanessa Kirby and Helena Bonham Carter.
While Pryce is certainly well known for his tenure on Game of Thrones, he also recently starred alongside Anthony Hopkins in The Two Popes. Pryce was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. I think he’s an excellent choice for an older Prince Philip on The Crown. He’s an immensely gifted performer, as is Staunton. Additionally, Manville was a deliciously deceptive delight as Lydia Quigley in the now-deceased Harlots. I’ve no doubt she’ll inject that same mischievousness into Princess Margaret. If there’s one thing The Crown has successfully nailed, it’s stellar casting across the board.
Season Four of The Crown is set to stream later this year. Seasons Five and Six of the royal drama will mark the final chapters of Queen Elizabeth II…in media form, that is.
