Jonathan Groff, a new guest star in Doctor Who

Star of stage and screen Jonathan Groff is joining the cast of Doctor Who. The show’s official site broke the news today, although there isn’t much more information at the moment. 

While we don’t know what role Groff will play, “he’s on his way to jump aboard the Tardis in a mysterious and exciting guest role,” says a statement from the BBC. He joins Ncuti Gatwa, who is set to debut as the Fifteenth Doctor during an episode set to air in the 2023 holiday season. Other new cast members include Jinkx Monsoon, Neil Patrick Harris and Yasmin Finney

On joining Doctor Who, Groff said: “I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!” Showrunner Russell T Davies is also excited, stating, “This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding onto our set. So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!”

Groff’s first major onscreen role was as Jesse St. James in the show Glee. Since then, he’s gained fame as Holden Ford in the series Mindhunter, King George III in Hamilton and Kristoff in Frozen. He’s been nominated for Emmys and Tonys and won a Grammy for his role in Hamilton.

As for new episodes of Doctor Who, the series will return in November 2023, with three new episodes celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary. David Tennant is set to appear as the Fourteenth Doctor, while Catherine Tate is reprising her role as Donna Noble. More new episodes starring Gatwa should air soon after, in 2024.
