It’s been a bit since we have had news surrounding Jon M. Chu‘s upcoming movie adaptation of Wicked. That is, until today, of course. Variety dropped exclusive news surrounding the casting of one of the most critical side characters to the tale – Fiyero. The story takes place before Dorothy ever arrives in Oz and follows two very different girls forced to room together at school and the rising political tension.

According to their article, Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey is currently in talks to star alongside Cynthia Erivo‘s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda in Wicked. The adaptation will be a two-part feature set for Christmas 2024 and 2025. It is based on the Broadway Musical, originally an adaptation of Gregory Maguire‘s 2005 novel of the same name. It will be interesting to see if screenwriters Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman will pull from both the musical and book to bring the story to life for the big screen.

Bailey’s Fiyero is an Arjiki prince from Vinkus and a fellow student at Shiz University. While he is eventually Elphaba’s love interest, it comes after quite a bit of pining and even a subplot that includes apparent feelings for Glinda. He plays a vital role in her journey alongside Glinda and a few others. With this possible casting, we are hopeful that others will come to light, including Elphaba’s sister Nessarose and The Wizard of Oz.

Now, Bailey joining the cast is still listed as “in talks,” but we are hopeful that the Viscount’s addition to Wicked is nearly set in stone. And with that announcement out of the way, we can get to others and first look images and teaser trailers and, finally, the release. But we still have a bit more time before we get to that point.
