Well, this is almost unexpected. According to Deadline, there is a Joker origin film in the works. And no, it’s not just a pipe dream, they even have a director for it. Todd Phillips of The Hangover and War Dogs is currently set to not only direct but co-write the film.

Phillips will be joined by Scott Silver in writing and Martin freaking Scorsese will produce the origin story which will delve into “what it took” to become the criminal mastermind. The film was not announced as one of the DCEU films on the slate at Comic Con this year. So it’s unsure if this film will be a “spinoff” or will be connected to the cinematic universe. The setting is also different! “The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era.”

I don’t think we need this film. We already have material that showed his “origin”. And The Joker is a character that is more interesting when we don’t know his past and what made him who he became. So, quite frankly, this news frustrates me. But, I’ll keep an open mind and we’ll see where this goes.

What do you think of a potential Joker origin film? Let us know. Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more DC news!
