Wow. Just, wow. After hearing that we have a Joker origin story film in the pipeline with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorcese, this is crazy news. While the origin film is said to be on it’s own, according to THR, this film will be in the DCEU canon.

According to the report, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, directors of This Is Us and Crazy, Stupid Love are in final talks to helm and write the film. Being described as a “criminal love story”, it will see the return of Jared Leto and Margot Robbie in their respective roles. Apparently, the film will be slated to come after the Suicide Squad sequel. Whether that’s story wise or only film release wise remains to be seen.

While it appears WB is all over the place with it’s DC films, this is an interesting bit of news. There’s no doubt that Harley Quinn has become a massively popular character in the past two decades. Not to mention Robbie’s performance as the bubbly criminal was a standout in Suicide Squad. So, this makes sense. Leto’s Joker is another story, however. But their relationship has been romanticized to such a degree that they’ve become one of the most popular comic couples of all time. A film staring just the two of them makes sense.

This worries me a bit though. Their relationship is not in the slightest bit healthy and if it’s romanticized as a “criminal love story”, it creates a dangerous message. However, as I have been with a lot of DC’s current films, I will go to it with an open mind. We’ll have to see what happens.
