Way back in 2019… before the pandemic hit us and everything went pear-shaped… Todd Phillips, a man who had previously given us silly, fun comedies like The Hangover and Road Trip, was already making things weird with Joker. That dark, psychologically arresting take on the DC supervillain, played by a painfully thin Joaquin Phoenix, was both polarizing and a big hit. Phillips promised a sequel and, five years later, we’re getting our first look at it with a new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux.
A Psychotic Meet-Cute
Joaquin Phoenix is back as Arthur Fleck, who is now fully The Joker and cooling his heels in Arkham Asylum. It’s in those grim halls that he encounters similarly troubled Harleen Quinzel, played by super diva Lady Gaga. All of this is accompanied by a haunting, tinkly version of “What The World Needs Now”.
After this dark meet-cute, it’s not long until Harleen becomes Harley Quinn, and the two start twirling their way through Gotham, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The vibe of the film feels very much of a piece with the original, maintaining the darkly humanizing tact Phillips took with its predecessor. But, uh, weren’t we promised a jukebox musical?
Send In The Songs!
Back in March, Variety reported that Joker: Folie à Deux would be a jukebox musical, featuring reinterpretations of popular songs like “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon made famous by Judy Garland. There was even talk of including original songs as well. All of this music was to be infused with the distinctive (and haunting) sounds created by Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guonadottir. Well, okay! That’s a big swing, but you’ve got Gaga, so we’re here for it.

But while Arthur and Harleen look like they’re dancing through a twisted Golden Era movie musical, we didn’t get any actual performances in this trailer. Let’s hope that the reporting in March was accurate and that we’ll get them in the next round of trailers.
Until then we’ll just have to enjoy this current peek at Joker: Folie à Deux which hits theaters on October 4, 2024 (with or without songs).
