Racers, start your engines! According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Boyega and Robert De Niro have been tapped to star in Netflix’s crime drama The Formula.
Director Gerard McMurray will helm the project and pen the script. The Formula follows a “Formula One racecar prodigy who becomes a getaway driver to save his family.” McMurray will also produce alongside Jane Rosenthal, De Niro and Berry Welsh.
Boyega is best known for his portrayal of Resistance fighter Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. However, his real breakout role came in 2011 with Attack the Block, wherein he played Moses. After his galactic introduction in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Boyega went on to star in Pacific Rim: Uprising. Additionally, he lent his voice for the 2018 Watership Down revival. He recently took center stage in Steve McQueen‘s Small Axe for Amazon Prime. Boyega’s next outing will be in this year’s Naked Singularity from Chase Palmer.

De Niro has been working in the entertainment industry since 1965, but his star-turning part came in 1976 with Martin Scorsese‘s Taxi Driver. He’s had plum roles in critically lauded films such as The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, Brazil, Goodfellas, Silver Linings Playbook and The Irishman. The Irishman debuted on Netflix in 2019 with Scorcese as director. Besides De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino also starred. De Niro recently wrapped filming for Wash Me in the River opposite John Malkovich.
McMurray directed 2017’s Burning Sands, one of Netflix’s first original features. His other directorial credits include The First Purge and The Twilight Zone reboot. Additionally, he was an associate producer for 2013’s Fruitvale Station.
Not much else is known about the project at this time or when filming will start.
I’m an avid fan of both actors, so I’m eager to witness the inevitable magic they’ll create together on screen. While I’m not a lover of Formula One or racecars in general, I dig the crime drama aspect to the premise.
