Fear not, Batman fans! Joe Manganiello confirms Ben Affleck’s upcoming Batman movie will be “gritty” and a “fresh take” on the character. Speaking on Mark Madden’s podcast, he confirmed that he has spoken to Affleck about the project. Over the weekend there was a rumor about the script not coming together, but Manganiello quiets those circulating worries with his enthusiasm over his role and the direction of the film so far.

“When I met Ben we sat down and we talked about, you know, the role. We talked about the movie. His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised. Because it’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to, you know, who Batman is. And I think it’s gonna be refreshing but at the same time completely familiar. But it’s going to take this franchise in a direction that I think A LOT of people are going to be really happy about. It’s going to be gritty and action packed and cerebral and all of those elements that people love about Batman.

Ben’s a great director, man. I mean the last movie that man directed won best picture. He’s got an Oscar for writing. Like, this is all the components to go down as a… everything is lined up for a really, really, really great movie. Not only a superhero movie but just a great, great movie.”

He could not discuss further on details of course but it leaves some questions. What is integral to Batman that hasn’t been explored in previous films? While this is an older Batman then we’re used to, what can Ben bring to the extensive Batman table? Filming is supposed to start in spring/summer of next year.

Manganiello is set to play the villain, Deathstroke, who is new to the Batman cinematic. The character has a larger tie to Teen Titans in his comics history, but has been a formidable opponent to Batman. He even made appearances in the wildly popular Batman Arkham games.

What do you think about Joe’s comments? Are you looking forward to seeing The Batman? Let us know and be sure to catch Batman next year in Justice League on November 17, 2017
