The BBC announced today that Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall and current doctor Jodie Whittaker will be saying goodbye to the series. Whittaker portrayed the first female Doctor in the series after Chibnall appointed her to take over Peter Capaldi‘s role in 2017. They both shared how much the series has impacted their lives as they prepare to move onto new roles.

Even though 2022 is just around the corner, there is still quite a bit left in Whittaker’s Doctor Who journey. They announced during SDCC 2021 that the delayed Series 13 would tell a single story and will release later this year. They also have two specials planned for 2022, though they haven’t shared the details or when they will release. In BBC’s statement today, it was also shared that they have asked for a feature-length adventure to help tie up Whittaker’s time as the Time Lord.

It will be interesting to see how they tie up her story alongside her companions. Will it be in a blaze of glory? Or will she quietly get to say goodbye and head off into the proverbial sunset? I guess we will just have to wait until next year. And with Whittaker’s time coming to an end, we can’t help but look at the future of the Doctor Who series. The series has been around since 1963 and we aren’t ready to say goodbye just yet.

So the question becomes – who’s next? Who is the next actor/actress to take on the role of Time Lord? Let us know who your choice is in the comments below and on social media! Be sure to check back for more Doctor Who news are we get closer to Series 13’s release!
