We have a director, everyone! It appears that Lucasfilm enjoyed JJ Abrams run of Episode 7 so much that they’re bringing him back again. Announced on StarWars.com, the man who revamped the galaxy far, far away is coming back for another outing for Star Wars: Episode IX.

In a statement released by Lucasfilm, they emphasized how happy they were with JJ’s work for the first film and how he launched the new saga to begin with. In addition, he’s bringing in Chris Terrio to co-write.

J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy echoed her excitement on Abrams return.

With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.

Fans who had been pining for Rian Johnson to return will be slightly disappointed. But this is a safe call by Lucasfilm. The Force Awakens was a MASSIVE success. So it only makes sense for him to return. Not only that, but Abrams was also interested in returning as is. So it’s a win-win for them.

How excited are you for Abrams to return? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news! Star Wars Episode IX will launch into theaters May 2019.
