Jeremy Renner is well-known for his action movie resume.  He’s been a spy, a soldier, and most notably, an Avenger.  But it was his portrayal as a regular every day guy that caused him to break not one, but both of his arms. Yep.  Renner broke both of his arms during the first few weeks of filming the upcoming movie Tag…not AvengersTag

Tag is about five childhood friends who have been playing the same game of tag their entire lives.  Now adults, the five friends often get together to try and tag the one guy who has never been ‘it.’  Renner plays that guy…Jerry has never been ‘it’ in this game of tag that’s lasted over 30 years.  The movie also stars Jon Hamm,  Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, and Jake Johnson.

If you follow Renner’s instagram, you probably saw the two casts on his arms last year and wondered what happened.  Renner gave no explanation until after Hamm mentioned the incident on Ellen last week.

“Keep in mind, this is a man who’s done a hundred Avengers movies and been fine. And he does a movie about playing tag… both arms, like firewood. Just snapped like a matchstick.”

Renner told Entertainment Weekly the accident happened early in the shooting schedule.  He explains the scene as a chase scene where he had to climb a stack of chairs to get away from Helms, Buress, and Johnson.  There were 20 to 30 chairs stacked about 20 feet high inside of a community hall.  The rigging of the chairs broke and Renner fell to the floor with all of the chairs.  He didn’t realize anything was broken until after he attempted the stunt a second time.

“Then I realized, I think something’s wrong, so I went to the hospital, and they said it was broken, so I got them wrapped up and then I went back to work and did everything I could do to continue on as we did,” – Renner, Entertainment Weekly

Production never halted even though Renner’s arms weren’t very mobile.  He explains that he could move his arms up and down, but couldn’t rotate his hands.  CGI was used in the film, but only in the scene where Renner broke his arms.  Renner finished the film and went straight into production on the Avengers 4 movie, with his arms still broken.

“What else do you do, you just stop and cry and everyone go home? You know what I mean? I’d be like, ‘sorry guys, I’m not going to use a bow and arrow now in Avengers,’ it’s silly, so I have to kind of push through so that you can perform for everyone,”

Renner has been going through physical therapy to get back to full strength.  He mentioned the hardest part was not being able to pick up his daughter.  Once he was able to do that, he says his mind was healed. AWWWWW…SO CUTE!

Tag hit theaters on June 15.
