Jeremy Irons Joins WATCHMEN Pilot

You had me at Jeremy Irons. According to Deadline, the thespian is joining Damon Lindelof‘s sequel-reboot (sea-boot) of Watchmen for HBO. Well, the pilot at least. He’s being billed as the lead in the cast but it’s unknown who he’s playing. Though we have a an idea as to who he may be playing. He joins an already great cast of Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard.

The article believes that Irons will be playing “an aging and imperious lord of a British manor”. We have no names or no hint other than that but I’m going to throw my idea into the ring as to who he could be portraying. I believe he may be an aged Nite Owl II. I don’t believe you would bring Jeremy Irons in for a brand new role but you never know! We really know nothing about these characters and how the story will go with them in it.

The Watchmen universe has been highly regarded by many comic book fans. So much so that fans agree with the notoriously grumpy creator Alan Moore in not wanting remakes of his work. Zack Snyder made a film attempt in 2009 to a split audience. And now with Lindeloff taking the wheel, a select few fans had voiced their frustrations with another remake of their beloved stories and characters. But Lindeloff feels the pressure more than anyone. He was so nervous about it in fact that he wrote a 5 page essay on why he loves the opportunity but also understands fan frustration.

Now with Irons on board, this could be a way to ease fan’s worry. Especially if he’s the lead. He was Scar in Lion King – he knows how to hold his own. Even so, we just saw him doing the best he could with his smaller role of Alfred Pennyworth in the DCEU. If I may be so bold, I believe he’s an excellent choice for casting. We know this will be based on more modern issues than those of the Regan-era so it’ll be interesting to see how his character will fit into all of that, if he’s an aging lord. We’ll have to wait and see.

What do you think about Iron’s casting? Are you excited too? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Watchmen news! The series currently doesn’t have a release date.
