Question: How can you place a series in Texas without visiting a State Fair? Answer: You simply can’t. Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld Season 1 Episode 6, “All’s Fair in Love and War,” sees Jentry (Ali Wong) introduce Ed (Bowen Yang) to the joys of Texan cuisine and culture. Of course, shenanigans ensue.
Gugu (Lori Tan Chinn) drives Jentry and Ed to the fair. En route, they watch the commercial. Gugu points out the commercial is old but doesn’t mention the best part, the secret Daoist magic market. Ed finds the entry in her bestiary book on jiangshis, demons like him, and finds the description quite insulting. It describes them as one of Diyu‘s least-threatening creatures — stiff, pathetic, and easily distracted.

Gugu’s not too concerned about updating the description. She’s focused on finding something in the market that will help close the portal. Jentry recalls Horse-Face (Stephen Fu) and Ox-Head’s (Kaiji Tang) warning about wielding the Yellow Emperor’s powers and asks Gugu about the Yellow Emperor. Gugu deflects and leaves to find a parking spot.
Inside the fair, Jentry flips over the nostalgic value of the fair. Ed’s trying to capture her cool aloofness when she goes running off for a bacon-wrapped peanut butter funnel cake pickles. Gugu leaves them to eat so she can find her friend at the market.
At the Riverfork fundraiser booth, football players take turns in the dunk tank raising money to rebuild Mimi’s. When Michael’s (AJ Beckles) turn comes up, Stella’s (Cristina Milizia) first up to dunk him.

Kit (Woosung) finds Jentry and Ed filming the bacon-wrapped peanut butter funnel cake pickle. He’s about to tell her the truth when Mr. Cheng (Greg Chun) traps him in a memory of all the people he’s drained of qi. Bumping into Jentry, Kit tries to talk to her, but her embarrassment drives her into awkward verbal territory with Ed’s unhelpful attempts to make him jealous.
Gugu’s Friend
After extracting themselves from the conversation with Kit, Jentry spots Gugu talking with the woman from her vision of her parents, Solar Tang (Suzie Yeung). Realizing the visions were accurate, she concludes that Gugu lied about the visions. Jentry decides to approach Solar to get the truth of what happened to her parents.
At the dunk tank, Stella hits the target, and Michael falls into the tank just as Jentry runs by, recreating the moment in his vision when he couldn’t reach her through a partition while swimming. He tries to explain the vision to Stella, but she’s too mad to listen and leaves.
Ed gets sidetracked while stalking Solar with Jentry. Kit finds her hiding behind a trash can. He tries to talk to her again to tell her the truth, but she’s distracted by Solar and unraveling Gugu’s lies. Cheng catches up with Kit again, showing him the first human boy he ever made friends with, then drained of qi. He gets upset and bumps into Jentry. The disruption catches Solar’s attention, and she runs. Jentry chases after her.

Ed’s been hung up in a midway booth as a prize. A kid approaches with his own set of darts. He plans on winning Ed. Ed’s not keen on being won.
Taking Responsibility
Michael walks around the fair and leaves a voicemail for Jentry about his dreams. He passes a Zoltar (Sean Allan Krill) machine that holds a crystal ball in one hand and a revolver in the other (because Texas), and it activates, inviting him to come closer and ask the questions that keep him up at night. He puts his money in and asks whether his vision will come true whether he acts on it or not. The machine gives him a card that reads, “Knowing the future comes with responsibility. If you do nothing, you will have your answer.”
Michael reads the card and asks the machine if it’s just a machine. The machine deactivates. Michael looks down and realizes the machine is unplugged and has an “Out of Order” sign. Panicking, he calls Stella’s number and runs off.
Solar Tang
Jentry chases Solar through the fair. Solar uses her powers to throw obstacles in Jentry’s way, but Jentry’s able to use her own powers to counter each attempt. Each time she expends her energy, Solar’s age catches up to her.

Kit looks for Jentry but finds the people he’s drained instead. Cheng’s voice reminds him that he connected with them all, but once they learned his truth, they rejected him. He assures Kit that Jentry will think he’s a monster too and demands he give into his nature and bring him Jentry’s soul.
Waking from Cheng’s glamor, Kit hears Gugu calling Jentry’s name. Kit approaches Gugu and tells her that he’s working for Cheng. She immediately attacks him.
At the midway booth, the carney (Stephen Fu) goes to award Ed to the boy. Ed bites him and runs. The boy’s excited to chase his prize.
Big Tex
Under the statue of Big Tex (Stephen Fu), Jentry stops Solar with a wall of flame. They struggle, and Solar’s magic wheel flies off and embeds itself in a mechanical bull, turning it into a real bull. Solar tells Jentry she tried to kill her parents but never succeeded. She directs Jentry to Gugu for the truth, but Jentry wants the answers from Solar.

The bull ejects its rider. Michael finds Stella in the crowd and calls out to her. The bull has Stella in its sights.
Ed evades the kid with the darts. Peeking out of his hiding place, he sees Jentry and Solar squaring off. He runs to help her, calling her name. Nearby, Kit hears him call Jentry’s name and follows, pursued by Gugu, still flinging things at him. He protests that he just needs to talk to Jentry. Jentry hears him and takes her attention off Solar, who grabs her staff.
Solar recalls her wheel, but not before the bull charges Stella. Michael tackles her out of the way. The wheel returns to Solar’s staff, but Ed crashes into her as she tries to deploy it again. The wheel flies into Big Tex and brings the statue to life. Solar’s staff is broken.
Not Coming Back Next Year
People start running as Big Tex begins stomping through the fairgrounds, flattening everything in his way. With the staff broken, Solar can’t control him. Jentry’s powers have no effect on him. Stella explains Big Tex is covered with flame-resistant paint because he caught fire in the past. However, under the paint, he’s made completely of wood. Spotting a small gap in the paint, Jentry sends Ed to widen it. She, Michael, and Stella run for the tents. Kit sees them and lends his strength to help push over the tents. When he offers his hand to help Jentry, Gugu flies over and tells Jentry that Kit’s been lying to her.

Jentry gets angry and confronts Gugu with the lies she’s told Jentry about her parents. This leaves Gugu speechless. Jentry runs up the slope of the fallen tent. Ed slingshots her into the hole in Big Tex, and once inside, she ignites her powers to incinerate the statue.
Kit runs inside once Big Tex begins to collapse, and despite the damage the fire is doing to his skin suit, he rescues her, leaping out of the burning statue and laying her gently on the ground. When she wakes up, he embraces her and realizes his skin suit is falling apart. He tries to get away but turns back when she calls his name. He reveals that he’s not human and begs her to understand that he would never hurt her. She recoils and tells him to get away from her.
Rejected
Michael calls Jentry’s name. Kit disappears. On the way home, Jentry reads about Painted Skin demons. Gugu tries to mend their relationship by telling Jentry how proud she is of how Jentry used her powers. Jentry puts in her headphones and drowns out the sound of Gugu’s voice.

At home, she continues to ignore Gugu. Up in her room, she replaces a photo of Gugu with one of her friends. Gugu comes in with a plate of apple pear slices. She tells Jentry that she doesn’t need Gugu’s protection anymore. Dipping her finger in a pot of liquid, she writes two Chinese characters on the floor, opening a portal.
She offers her hand to Jentry, who asks where they are going. Gugu says, “To see your parents.”
