Javier Bardem is the in talks to join Denis Villeneuve’s Dune reboot.  The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Bardem will play Stilgar, the Fremen mentor to Paul Atreides played by Timothee Chalamet.

The story of Dune centers on the planet Arrakis and the spice melange.  Everyone in the galactic empire wants to control the spice because the spice controls everything in the universe.  The Fremen are the indigenous people of Arrakis who are not only fighting for the survival of their people, but also of their planet.  Stilgar is the leader of the sietch that finds and rescues Paul (Chalamet) and his mother Jessica played by Rebecca Ferguson. Stilgar teaches Paul the Fremen ways and becomes Paul’s general in the Fremen rebellion.

Villeneuve’s version is set for two films. There are two other versions of the Frank Herbert novel. David Lynch wrote the screenplay and directed the 1984 version.  The SYFY channel remade the sci-fi classic in 2000. Everett McGill and Uwe Ochsenknecht have previously portrayed Stilgar.

Now.  Javier Bardem is an exciting casting choice.  And I have no doubt he would be great as Stilgar.  However, in my honest opinion, maybe Bardem should be the Duke…and Oscar Isaac should play Stilgar.  Maybe?  It could work.  They’re both great actors.

The new Dune cast includes Stellan Skarsgård , Dave Bautista and Charlotte Rampling.  Zendaya and Isaac are in talks to joining the cast. Villeneuve will produce the film with Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull, and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers. Villeneuve is directing and co-writing the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts.

The Dune reboot will begin filming later this spring.
