The CW shared not one but two new images of Javicia Leslie from the upcoming season of DC‘s Batwoman. Leslie joined the series as the new lead after Ruby Rose‘s Kate Kane hung up the cape and cowl. She will be portraying the brand new character Ryan Wilder, a likable woman who is a little goofy, messy and untamed. At the beginning of the season, Ryan will be sporting Kate’s initial batsuit before deciding to make her own.
Ryan’s first thoughts when donning Kate’s old suit is more along the lines of what the suit can do for her. But she soon realizes what the suit means to the people of the city. The brand new suit will be revealed in the third episode of Batwoman as a message to Gotham. A new savior has arrived. The suit was conceptualized by costume designer Maya Mani and created by Ocean Drive Leather. Her wig was created by Janice Workman and her makeup by Cory Roberts.
Showrunner Carole Dries spoke about the modifications during DC Fandome in September. Dries and Leslie knew that a new suit would be needed to set Ryan’s Batwoman away from Kate’s. They also wanted to honor Leslie as the first woman of color to portray the character in both a TV series and film. The new Batwoman suit looks simply amazing. While it still has a similar look to Kate’s suit, the alterations really help show off the differences between the two characters.
We also can’t forget to point out how great Ryan’s hair looks. It holds onto her identity as a black woman even under the cowl. Costume designer Maya Mani shared, “It was important for the new suit to define Javicia’s commanding presence while showcasing her athleticism and allowing her the freedom to express the physical nature of Batwoman, all while looking ultra-cool in the process!”.
The second season of Batwoman will open with a focus on Kate Kane’s disappearance and the void left for another vigilante to step up. This is where Ryan Wilder will step up and take over. Little is known other than that. Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie, Camrus Johnson, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang and Dougray Scott. Season Two will darken our screens sometime in the near future, only on The CW. Check out the new suit below and let us know how much you love it!
