We learned today that Sony is throwing another film into the mix. They’re putting all their money behind Jared Leto because the actor has been cast as the lead in Morbius. Based on an anti-hero in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, the film has a production team lined up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has Daniel Espinosa at the helm and Netflix‘s Lost in Space showrunners Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama will pen the script. Is this the film we want from the Spider-Man universe though?

Dr. Michael Morbius PhD, a scientist created for Spider-Man’s horror rogues in 1971, has changed over the years. Intially he was a villain but later became a more tragic figure when he morphed into an anti-hero. Known as Morbius the Living Vampire, he gained his vampiric nature through a failed biochemical experiment in an attempt to fix his rare blood disease. He’s not fully a vampire though, only a pseudo-vampire which gives him superhuman abilities such as strength and speed as well as heightened senses. Those among a number of other abilities.

News of a Morbius film seems to be at random. Sony had just announced a Silk film, which would be another Spider-Man spinoff film. We already have Venom coming out. They halted production on Black & Silver. It almost appears like the company is announcing films and seeing what fans stick to the most. And I don’t recall anyone clamoring for a Morbius film. Why is this a character that needs his own film? He couldn’t have been in the next Spider-Man film? I don’t understand.

There are far too many questions here but I feel that Sony needs to pull the reigns a bit and focus on the slate they’ve already announced. Have they learned nothing from DC where announcing things and seeing if the idea sticks ISN’T a good idea? I feel that companies really need to work on making the characters they have be better before they bring in more and more. And I’ve already expressed my feelings about Leto as Joker but I geninuely don’t think he’s the actor people need. He’s fine but I’m sure there’s a plethora of other actors that could’ve done been up to task. I hate to use the term overrated but I will – he’s overrated.

Before I end up in a Leto-infused rant, why don’t you let us know what you think about the casting and film? Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Marvel character news. Morbius is currently in pre-production.
