James Gunn Signs On to SUICIDE SQUAD 2

Erin Lynch

Well! Color me excited for this news. Yesterday, Deadline revealed that James Gunn has headed over to WB and DC. Over a year ago, we learned that the sequel to Suicide Squad had a writer and director in Gavin O’Connor but things have changed. Gunn has been hired to write! Not only that but it looks like they’re leaving the door open for him to direct the film as well. Yes! Freaking! Please!

According the article, Gunn is bringing a completely different take to the franchise, which is exciting. We know he’s capable of bringing together a solid ensemble piece. Additionally, he as an eye for horror, so he’ll be able to slide into the darker material easy. Unfortunately not much is known outside of him taking on the writing. But actor Dave Bautista, one of Gunn’s most outspoken supporters, has already raised his hand in wanting to join the film.

I’m so excited for this. For me, Suicide Squad was an okay film but a bit of mess in terms of writing and editing. It had the potential to be so much better. In Gunn’s hands, this could work out really well. While it’s sad he won’t be continuing on any more adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy, this could be the opportunity that he needs. A new band of misfits that need to come together. It could also be part of the jolt DC needs to bring better, more creative films to their slate. I can’t see any of this being bad.
