It looks like things are moving full steam ahead for Suicide Squad 2. Back in October we learned that James Gunn was signing on to the sequel as a writer. It was reported that Gunn and WB were leaving the door open for Gunn to also direct the feature. Well, according to a report from THR, it looks like he’s going to be helming the film!
Since his very public firing from Disney last summer, the writer/director has been keeping a low profile. While he’s contributed to other projects, this would mark his first directorial project since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. According to the report, Gunn is going to be making the franchise entirely his own. The plans for the film include featuring (mostly) all-new characters and actors. It’s unclear which ones will make the cut but we have to image that Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn will continue to thrive.

The move, while not unexpected, is still a welcome one. With the $1 billion dollar success of Aquaman, DC will more than likely start pushing for bolder and more unique visions. And there’s no one better at doing that then James Gunn. He made a talking raccoon and tree one of the most successful films out of the MCU. Disney and Marvel’s loss could definitely be DC’s gain, so long as they keep interference minimal. We’ll have to wait and see if he signs on before getting too excited – but the DCEU is looking a bit more fun!
