Guardians of the Galaxy fans rejoice! James Gunn has said that there will definitely be a Guardians of the Galaxy 3. When speaking with Complex, Gunn spoke of the sequel film and confirmed a third movie but no further details. Let the celebrations commence!
First, he spoke of Ego and how a living planet will function in the movie. “Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he’s been alone for millions of years and he’s learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell. I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother.” I genuinely enjoy his answer here. Seeing as we have to stretch the imagination anyways, thinking of a planet manifest itself in different ways seems plausible. I’ve gone crazy haven’t I?
Gunn also spoke of Guardians 2 as being a very personal project as he had full creative control. Seeing as his heroes are roaming the galaxy, he’s free to do what he pleases and not have to worry about Marvel’s interference. He even addresses it, going on to say “I’ve been lucky in that the most creatively fulfilling freeing experience I’ve ever had making a film has been on Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. Without a doubt. …Because at the end of the day any choice was mine, if there’s ever a disagreement we go in my direction.” One of the big things about Marvel is that we’ve heard that the films always have to connect. Gunn actually disagrees but I’m sure Josh Whedon and Edgar Wright could tell him a thing or two about The Marvel Way.
But the biggest news by far was when Complex asked if there is any plans for Guardians 3. Gunn said quote “There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure.” He elaborated, saying he’ll either be working on another project or Guardians 3 first but he has definite plans with the misfits of space. He would be deciding over the next few weeks what he planned to do. And to top it all off he said that the Guardians will have a small but integral role in the Infinity Wars.
