Jacqui pushes something on her gauntlet as she looks ahead.

Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we spotlight strong women and non-binary folks who inspire us. These characters are prime examples of empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said examples to follow.

Jacqui Briggs

Fast Facts

Sergeant Jacqueline Sonya “Jacqui” Briggs makes her first appearance in the Mortal Kombat X comic series. She becomes a playable character in Mortal Kombat X the video game as a main protagonist in story mode. In her youth, Briggs was a professional kickboxer and even competed in the Junior Olympics.

Jacqui is the daughter of Jax Briggs, a classic and well-known Mortal Kombat character. Her mother, Vera nursed Jax back to health after losing his arms in a battle with Ermac. Jax served in the Special Forces and discouraged his daughter from doing the same to protect her. However, Jacqui felt it was her duty to protect the Earthrealm and avenge her father who lost everything at the hands of Quan Chi.

This woman works quickly, in Mortal Kombat X she is ranked as a Specialist but has become a Sergeant in Mortal Kombat 11. She enhances her already killer fighting skills with electrified gauntlets that can fire plasma energy, shotgun rounds or machine gun bullets depending on her mood. In MK11 she has bionic leg enhancements making her legs just as deadly as her arms. As a result, she can channel energized currents throughout her body to deliver some serious power to her blows.

One of her signature moves includes Gauntlet Strike in which she charges the opponent with a stomach punch, follows up with a four-punch combo then kicks the opponent away like nothing. With a lot of her moves like Hand Canon or Grenade Launcher, she launches deadly projectiles at her foes from her bionic gauntlets.

Sergeant Briggs is best friends with Cassie Cage and often serves as the voice of reason to her more impulsive friend. She supports her friend Cassie’s leadership even though she doesn’t always agree with her impetuous actions.  Jacqui even saves Cassie’s life a couple of times; she is there for her friend on and off the battlefield. Scorpion reveals in Mortal Kombat 11 that Jacqui is engaged to Kenshi’s son Takeda Takahashi.

The Real Deal

Jacqui knows the dangers of being in the Special Forces because her father lost his arms and almost his life serving. Even though she was encouraged to take the safe and easy route, she chose to serve her realm and avenge her father. She was already a force to be reckoned with as a youth and with time (and augmentations), few can take her down. Ultimately, Sergeant Briggs is an experienced soldier who constantly and fearlessly runs into the heat of battle.

In Mortal Kombat 11 she insists on joining her father to investigate the Well of Souls underneath Shang Tsung’s island. Alongside her father, she takes on a swarm of undead, a Revenant Jade and even the Elder God, Cetrion. Jacqui also confronts an alternate version of Jax which shows doing the right thing means even more than the bond with her father.

Sergeant Briggs also seems to be the go-to tech girl in the Special Forces. For instance, she frequently tracks enemies using various gadgets throughout the game. She supports her friend Cassie’s leadership even though she doesn’t always agree with her impulsive actions.

Why She Matters

Jacqui Briggs, Cassie Cage, Takahashi Takeda and Kung Jin make up the next generation of Mortal Kombat fighters called The Kombat Kids. They are a representation of the future of a franchise that hopefully speaks to the next generations of players.

Jacqui is an amazing fighter but also a great friend and an even better daughter. She is practical, loyal, honorable and she kicks total ass.  Additionally, she shows that fighting and tech are not just for the boys. Jacqui’s fresh face represents a new beginning for Mortal Kombat and we cannot wait to see what her future holds.

Be like Jacqui, forge your path to stand up for what you believe in. Be strong and sensible. Be loyal to those around you but not at the expense of yourself or your beliefs. Most importantly, find creative ways to shatter those glass ceilings even if you have to use cool cybernetic augmentations.
