Rising Stars Combined

Deadline is reporting Rising Stars, the 24-issue limited series by J. Michael Straczynski, has now been optioned by MGM.

Originally published in 1999 by Top Cow, the creator owned comic follow 113 people born with special abilities (called Specials) following the appearance of a mysterious light in the sky above Pederson, Illinois.  The series explores how society may react to the appearance of superpowers and how those superpowered people may react to society and each other.

Personally I hold a firm belief that this is the series that inspired both the Heroes television series and The 4400 television series.  I have nothing based in fact but I read the original comic as it was released, still have them in fact, and both Heroes and The 4400 have similarities to Rising Stars that just can’t quite be ignored.  Feel free to read the series and draw your own conclusions.

J. Michael Straczynski created and produced the Emmy and Hugo-winning science fiction series Babylon 5 and, more recently, wrote and executive produced the Netflix series Sense 8 with Lily and Lana Wachowski.  His script credits also include Changeling, Thor, Underworld Awakening and World War Z.  Throughout all of that he still finds time to create comics for both Marvel, DC, and Top Cow.

Straczynski is set to write the script, unclear as to if it will be a movie or a television series or a series of movies.  Alex Gartner and Richard Suckle will produce for Atlas Entertainment in partnership with Straczynski through his JMS company.
