According to an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter, DC’s and Warner Bros.’s film, The Justice League, has just made it’s first major casting announcement beyond the titular heroes that define the team — Oscar Winning actor J.K. Simmons will play Commissioner Jim Gordon.
Simmons, who’s in his early 60’s, fits in perfectly as an old ally to Batman, who’s also older in this series, having been fighting crime in Gotham for 2o years previous to the events in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Simmons is no stranger to comic book movies as his last role was as J. Jonah Jameson in the original Spider-Man trilogy, which he perfectly brought to life. If his work in that film and his Oscar for Whiplash is any indication, he should be perfect casting for Gordon, one of Batman’s staunchest and most trustworthy allies in the comics. He is, in fact, the character that usually uses the Batsignal to call Batman to action.
The production needed to find a big name to play the role as the last person to portray the character was the one and only Gary Oldman who inhabited the role in a way as to make it all his own.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as “Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg teaming up to combat a threat beyond each member’s capabilities.” The film will be directed by Zack Snyder and will also star Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, is scheduled to start filming in April for a November 2017 release.
