Hello neighbor. It’s been a while since we’ve met. Many Americans remember Mr Rogers’ Neighborhood as one of the few (or many) programs they watched as a kid. His gentle voice teaching important life lessons seeped into our consciousness for many, many years. While most of us moved away from the neighborhood of make believe as we grew, we still remember the incredibly kind Mr. Rogers. That’s why when the trailer for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood dropped, a rush of emotion washed over many people.
The biopic based on interactions with Fred Rogers and his impact on American culture comes from a real life story. A cynical journalist (played by Matthew Rhys) begrudgingly takes the assignment of writing a profile piece on Mr. Rogers (played by Tom Hanks). However, after spending some time with the icon, the journalist changes his perspective on life. That’s mostly what we get from the trailer along with heavy hitting lines such as “sometimes we have to ask for help and that’s okay”.
In a year full of biopics, this one seems to resonate the most. Mr. Rogers was a part of most of our childhoods and his message was pure. Every one of us is special and we should be kind to one another. As cynical and broken adults, it reminds us of a time when things were simple and magical. This film is definitely going to be an uplifting and emotional rollercoaster, especially with Hanks playing the television personality. I’m tearing up already.

Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbor.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood comes to our neighborhoods on November 22, 2019.
